Buddhist Justice or Foucauldian Discipline? The King’s Sufficiency Economy in Thai Politics

Details

When: Tuesday, March 12 2013, 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Location: UWP- Cinema
Categories: Community Based, Culturally Related, Lecture

The Sufficiency Economy Philosophy of the King of Thailand advocates economic security via the Buddhist Middle Path – rejecting profit, greed, and over-attachment. Is this culturally appropriate economic development or, as some argue, a way to tell the poor to not desire more and accept their place? Kate Gillogly will discuss the political, economic, and environmental possibilities of a Buddhist economic justice and how the philosophy is used by different actors in the complex setting of Thai politics today.

Speaker: Ph.D. Kathleen Gillogly
